A cottage for two in Bellingham
Lock Up Mews is a small, modernised studio for two, tucked down a quiet lane in the heart of Bellingham. It has a comfortable double bed, a kitchen and everything you need without any clutter. It's the kind of place you come back to after a long day on the hills, rather than somewhere you spend the day indoors. The village pubs, cafés, tearooms and shops are all less than a minute's walk away, and parking is in the market square.
Walking the Pennine Way
Bellingham is one of the classic overnight stops on the Pennine Way, and the trail passes through the village. If you're walking it, Lock Up Mews gives you a proper bed and a kitchen rather than a bunkhouse. It also makes a good base for a few days walking the sections either side, south towards Hadrian's Wall or north towards Byrness and the Cheviots.
Closer to home, the Hareshaw Linn walk starts at the edge of the village: 3 miles there and back through woodland, across six footbridges, to a 30ft waterfall. The riverside paths along the North Tyne make an easy evening stroll.
Dark skies and stargazing
Bellingham sits on the edge of Northumberland National Park, within easy reach of Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, one of the largest areas of protected night sky in Europe. On a clear night you can often see the Milky Way from the edge of the village. For the full experience, book an evening at Kielder Observatory, roughly 45 minutes' drive away. Sessions sell out, especially in autumn and winter.
Things to do nearby
Kielder Water & Forest Park is about 15–20 minutes up the valley, with lakeside walks, forest drives and bike hire. Hadrian's Wall and Housesteads Roman Fort are around half an hour south. In the village, St Cuthbert's Church dates back to the 11th century, the Heritage Centre has a railway carriage tearoom, and the Cheviot does good food and local ales.
Bringing your dog
One well-behaved dog is welcome at Lock Up Mews. With the woods, river and moorland right on the doorstep, it's an easy place for a dog holiday, and the Cheviot in the village is dog-friendly too.
Good to know
Best time to visit. Spring and early summer for walking; late August for the Bellingham Show; October to March for the darkest skies.
Getting here. Around 30 minutes from Hexham, and roughly 50 minutes from Newcastle Airport.

Isabel - 4 stars - February 2025 - We had a really enjoyable stay. It's a compact studio, which suited the two of us perfectly. Despite the cold weather outside, the room heated up nicely and the bed was warm and comfortable. The only downside was some noise from the upstairs neighbours — not voices, but footsteps and cupboard doors were quite audible, which was a shame as it's otherwise a lovely peaceful retreat.
