Must See - Things to do in Berwick-upon-Tweed

  • The Elizabethan Walls - walk the ramparts built in the reign of Elizabeth I to keep the Scots out. The full circuit gives brilliant views over the town, the river and the sea.

  • Berwick Barracks - one of the first purpose-built barracks in Britain, now home to the King's Own Scottish Borderers Regimental Museum. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/berwick-upon-tweed-barracks-and-main-guard/

  • The Three Bridges - the 17th-century Old Bridge, Robert Stephenson's Royal Border Bridge and the Royal Tweed Bridge. Best seen from the quayside.

  • Berwick Pier and Lighthouse - walk out along the pier to the lighthouse at the mouth of the Tweed, and look out for seals and dolphins.

  • The Lowry Trail - L.S. Lowry painted Berwick many times. Follow the trail boards to the spots where he set up his easel.

  • Berwick Town Hall - see the 18th-century gaol cells at the top of the building, complete with prisoners' graffiti.

  • The Maltings - theatre, cinema, live music and exhibitions. https://www.maltingsberwick.co.uk/

  • Spittal and Cocklawburn Beaches - golden sands and rock pools just south of the town.

  • The Union Chain Bridge and Chain Bridge Honey Farm - a short drive up the Tweed at Horncliffe. The bridge opened in 1820 and still carries traffic between England and Scotland. Close by, the Honey Farm has a free visitor centre with a living observation hive, a honey shop, a vintage vehicle collection and a café in an old double-decker bus (seasonal). https://www.chainbridgehoney.com/
