Where you are

Eider Cottage sits just off the harbour in the middle of Seahouses, on one of the quieter streets behind the seafront. You can walk to the harbour in about a minute, which means the Farne Islands boat trips leave from roughly the length of a street away. The beach is a few minutes further on, the village shops, chip shops and pubs are all within five minutes on foot, and Seahouses Golf Club is about seven minutes' walk.

The thing most people notice first is the parking. Seahouses in July is not a place you want to be circling for a space, and the cottage comes with its own private parking behind original stone walls, with room for a mid-sized car if you've brought one. It's a small thing until it's four o'clock on a Saturday in August and you've got a car full of wet towels.

Bamburgh Castle is about five minutes up the coast road, Beadnell Bay minutes the other way, and Holy Island around thirty minutes north — though check the causeway crossing times before you set off, because the tide doesn't negotiate.

Getting out to the Farne Islands

The boat trips go from Seahouses harbour, which is the main reason a lot of people come to the village in the first place. Puffin season runs roughly from April to late July, with the birds usually at their best in May and June. Grey seals are there year-round, and the autumn pup season in October and November is worth seeing if you don't mind the cold.

Boats sell out in summer, so book a day or two ahead rather than turning up at the harbour. Billy Shiels and Serenity are both reputable operators that offer various lengths of trip at different times of the day.

Bringing your dog

Two small to medium sized, well-behaved dogs are welcome at Eider Cottage, and Northumberland is about as good as dog holidays get in England. The beach at Seahouses and the enormous stretch of sand at Bamburgh are both open to dogs year-round, and you can walk the coast path north towards Bamburgh or south to Beadnell straight from the door.

All the pubs in Seahouses are dog-friendly and the Black Swan is just at the end of the road from Eider Cottage. There are several vets a short drive away in Alnwick if your pooch gets poorly.

Good to know

Best time to visit. June and July for puffins and long evenings; September for warm sea, quieter streets and better prices; winter for storms, empty beaches and the electric heater doing its work in the living room.

Access to the Ocean Club Spa. Guests can use the nearby spa and wellness centre at a discounted rate.

Getting here. Around 15 minutes' drive from the A1, 30 minutes from Alnmouth station, and roughly an hour from Newcastle Airport.

Frequently asked questions
