Where you are

Castle Hill View sits in the middle of Bellingham, right beside the market square, in the North Tyne valley on the edge of Northumberland National Park. Everything in the village is on foot: the Co-op is a few steps from the door, and the cafés, bakery, takeaways and pubs are all within a minute or two. The living space is upstairs, with original ceiling beams and views across the valley, and on a quiet morning it's not unusual to spot deer on the hillside.

Parking is easy, which isn't always true of Northumberland villages. You can park on the street outside or in the market square, with no permits and no car park machines to feed.

Things to do from the door

The Hareshaw Linn walk starts at the edge of the village. It's about 3 miles there and back through ancient woodland, crossing six wooden footbridges to a 30ft waterfall, and takes around an hour and a half to two hours. It's one of the best short walks in the county and a good one for older children.

The Pennine Way runs straight through Bellingham, so you can walk a stretch of England's most famous long-distance trail without getting in the car. For something gentler, the riverside paths along the North Tyne are flat and pram-friendly.

In the village, St Cuthbert's Church dates back to the 11th century, with Cuddy's Well just beside it. Bellingham Heritage Centre tells the story of the valley's mining and railway past, and its old railway carriage tearoom is a favourite with families. The 18-hole golf course is on the edge of the village.

Kielder, Hadrian's Wall and further afield

Kielder Water & Forest Park is about 15–20 minutes' drive up the valley, with the largest man-made lake in northern Europe, bike trails, a water park at Leaplish and miles of forest walks. Kielder Observatory is roughly 45 minutes away. Book ahead for an evening stargazing session, because the skies here are some of the darkest in England.

Hadrian's Wall is around half an hour south, and Housesteads Roman Fort is the classic place to start. Hexham, with its abbey, market and railway station, is about 30 minutes away.

Bringing your dog

Two well-behaved dogs are welcome at Castle Hill View. You can walk them straight out of the door onto the riverside paths, the Pennine Way or the Hareshaw Linn trail, keeping them under control in the woods and near livestock. The Cheviot in the village is dog-friendly, which makes for an easy evening out.

Good to know

Best time to visit. Late spring for bluebells in the Hareshaw woods; summer for Kielder's lake and long evenings; late August for the Bellingham Show; autumn and winter for the darkest skies and quiet walks.

Families. There's a bunk room for children and a travel cot, and the shop is on the doorstep for nappies and milk.

Getting here. Around 30 minutes from Hexham, and roughly 50 minutes from Newcastle Airport.

Always got parked right outside. There are 3 pubs in the village and a couple of cafes/ bakeries. We used it as our base while attending a wedding in Otterburn.

Lesley - 4 stars - July 2026 - This is a pleasant little upside-down house (living room upstairs, bedrooms and bathroom downstairs). The furnishings are traditional in style, some appliances a little older but others new. It is very quiet and well-located in the centre of the village.

Derek - 5 stars - August 2025 - We stopped in Bellingham for a couple of nights to break up a long drive from southern England to Scotland. A well-appointed, comfortable property with almost everything right outside the door — pubs, cafes, a greengrocer, Co-op and Chinese takeaway, plus a local brewery and tap room well worth a visit, and some great countryside walks.

David - 5 stars - September 2025 - A great spot right in the centre of Bellingham, nestled in the stunning Northumberland countryside. Brilliant for dog walks, with a decent pub opposite, a great coffee shop nearby and handy access to local shops. Comfortable beds throughout, though the back bedroom got a little noisy early on weekday mornings with school buses. The living space is compact but thoughtfully laid out with great sofas. The kitchenette was well stocked — a refreshing change from rentals that assume you'll always eat out. Everything was clean and well presented. Highly recommended and we'd gladly return.

A wonderful stay overall, perfect for visiting Hadrian's Wall and the surrounding area.

Rebecca - 5 stars - January 2025 - Stunning surroundings — such a beautiful setting to wake up in. We loved visiting the local butcher and greengrocer to support independent businesses. Thank you for a wonderful trip — we're already hoping to come back for longer!

Chris provided clear and detailed instructions covering everything we needed. The location was superb for exploring Northumberland, with numerous walks from the doorstep and further afield. The property itself was charming, cosy and spotless, with a lovely welcome pack. A few brilliant days in a delightful little cottage in a truly quaint part of the world.

Archana - 4 stars - July 2024 - A very practical and well-equipped place with everything you need for time away from home. Having a shop close by and a fresh fruit stall next door was a real bonus, as was the free parking and reliable internet. The artificial plants are perhaps a few too many and do take up quite a bit of room, but that's a minor point. Would happily return.

Dorothy - 5 stars - April 2025 - Absolutely loved this bright and beautifully presented little house. Gorgeous interior and very comfortable throughout. A great base for exploring the area, and the views from the upstairs living room were a real highlight.

Fiona - 5 stars - April 2025 - A thoroughly enjoyable weekend break in a clean, well-presented and comfortable home. Chris was prompt and courteous in responding to my queries. Thank you for making our stay such a pleasant one.

Diane - 5 stars - December 2024 - I was in Bellingham for work and stayed for four nights, with my husband and our large Labrador joining me for the first and last nights — there was more than enough room for all of us. Even in the bitter cold, the cottage was beautifully warm. There are some really thoughtful touches, including a Christmas tree and a welcome bottle of wine and chocolates. Perfectly situated in the heart of Bellingham, and the dog-friendly pub just across the road is a real bonus. Highly recommended.

Tori - 5 stars - October 2024 - A gorgeous, cosy cottage tucked away in the lovely village of Bellingham, just a short drive from all that Northumberland has to offer. Immaculate accommodation, a fantastic host and a breathtaking setting — absolutely nothing to fault. Already looking forward to coming back for another peaceful getaway.

Michael - 5 stars - February 2025 - Highlights: right in the centre of Bellingham, spotlessly clean, a very comfortable double bed and a lovely surprise welcome package. Worth knowing: it's a compact space but perfectly fine for a long weekend for a couple and a dog. We did find it tricky to get the shower pressure quite right.
